There is a rule in modeling, about not to place vertices with valence of 5 on curved surfaces, in other words not to have poles with more than 5 edges on curved surfaces. But then we always see them on organic models which are all curved and smooth like the faces and body of our characters. The question is, how curved is a curved surface in this rule?
