Smooth Bind vs Rigid Bind

Is there any rule of thumb to determine what kind of binding to use? What are the advantages and disadvantages of each?

if you want something to beformed organically (like skin) use smooth, mechanically use rigid-

smooth binding means that a point can be a member of more than one set. Whereas rigid binding means that it can only ever be a member of one. So what howard said is essentially true, however you can still use rigid binding on organics
