Introduction to Maya - Rendering in Arnold
This course will look at the fundamentals of rendering in Arnold. We'll go through the different light types available, cameras, shaders, Arnold's render settings and finally how to split an image into render passes (AOV's), before we then reassemble it i

here are a few early renders - need to work on the keys and some of the things hanging off of him. not too happy with the shadows - i'd like to get them stronger.

hey congrats on that man!

and nice job on the pose... you can definitely feel the weight of all the crap hanging off of him.

well hell nice job on the renders (yea i agree with the shadows though), the modeling, AND the texturing!

thanks a lot neostrider and starjsjswars - i really apprecate the comments. user added image

what would be the best way to increase shadows? i'm a bit of a noob when it comes to lighting. at the moment i'm using final gather and it seems to bleach things out.

i'd like to look for a job as a modeler, but i don't have any experience. i'm also trying to get my website done first.

why bother with mental ray..,

use maya software and depth map.., light link .., sample the colour of the bounce and key lights from the environment (eg, sample the colour of the ground for the bounce lights)..,

use an array of directional lights

ill do an example its easier to show

the ones pionting up have their colour sampled from the line of site from the ground.., different for each light depending on the ground

the ones pionting down have the colour sampled (eye dropper) from the 'sky' so some will be the colour of the clouds (from line of site) and some blue sky.

shadows can be done using a spotlight (perambula will give a fall off) or directional light.., depth map shadows.., easy and quick

maya renderer is good with some effort.

keep the bounce lights light linked and low intensity

you can use as many light in each array as you want for accuracy and have them at different angles.., some at -45 degrees.., some at -39 .., ect.., hope you understand this

you could almost create a complete sphere of them if needed but usually the bounce and sun arrays are grouped separately

thanks for the info mirek - it's much appreciated. i'd still like to work out how to darken the shadows with mental ray though.

This is looking sweet although a couple things did bother me on first impression.
Firstly the chains seem a little out of scale and overly large and the second being the shadowing, but a nice render all the same and great pose too.

thanks guys. user added image

mirek - i don't think an occlusion pass would darken shadows necessarily - just the areas that receive less light.

jsprogg - thanks mate - yeah my wife thinks the chain might be a bit big too. i go back and forth on it - i want the chain to be large as it's supposed to be a burden - but i'll see how it goes.

taking a break from this at the moment, though i did do another quick render - i changed the shadow casting spot light to a directional light which helped with the shadows and i also added an occlusion. the new light is still a bit strong, but i think this is looking better. user added image
