How to composit render passes?

I am missing something somewhere. I have been hiding some of my objects in the scene and rendering them and saving them as a tiff file. I then import into photoshop and put them into layers. The problem is each top layer's black mask covers the layer under it.

I read about the advantages of multi-pass rendering, but I can't seem to make it work for me. In the article, they were using After Effects. I am using photoshop.

Am I rending out my layers in Maya correctly by hiding objects in each layer? What do I need to do in photoshop to get rid of the back mask (empty of objects)?

If it's too much to expain here, can you point me to a tutorial?

Thanks
Kori
