Overall Lighting

I keep hearing people say that they do an overall lighting to get nice shadows, and a nice finish render.

I have no idea what they are talking about when the say they use overall lighting. I do a model and throw the three main lights in, key, fill and back and my renders do not come out half as nice as the pictures in the WIP forum.

Sure, what are the settings you would use to get a good render of a model. Good soft shadows, etc...

You can use a plug in for the lighting called GI Joe that produces really good results.

Or you can use mantal Ray with a NURBS sphere around the object with a white lambert material with the incadesance all the way up.

Render with final gather on and the rays to about 300.

they are called raytrace shadows, and the light radius determines the softness of the shadow.

Also- to use Global Illumination, you need to use the Mental Ray renderer.
