Maya for 3D Printing - Rapid Prototyping
In this course we're going to look at something a little different, creating technically accurate 3D printed parts.

Mental Ray and Glow Effect

user added image
Does anyone know how to make the glow effect on a shader work with MR? Does mental ray even support this effect. I.E. I have a model with some faces that I have applied a glow effect
to. It shows up fine in Maya Software render but in MR it only shows the material color on the faces not the glow. Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

thanks

MR does not support Glow effects. though, an alternative is to program mental ray to glow for you. that is a hard one though.

you can use contour shaders in the MR customr shaders to achieve this

this is the best result i've gotten for glow with MR maya. Its actually a comp of MR for the scene and maya software for the lightning and glow effect. there are many possibilities with the comp technique. IMHO i dont like the toon shader glow. I cant get it to look real.

looks good man. comp sometimes just work the best. The procedure I posted was faking glows not the best choice.

That looks really good, how did you comp the two together?
Did you just render out the glow as tga's with all other geometry hidden?
