i am trying to recreate this style of render, is it just an occlusion pass or what else?

It looks like lambert shaders and an AO render as you said.

can you get colour onto occlusion passes? user added image

No but you can comp the AO over the colour

cheers for the ideas

i just tried an AO comped ontop of a beauty made of surface shaders so that they were flat and the AO pass provided all the shadow info

its close but not quite there
i will carry on trying
