Introduction to Maya - Modeling Fundamentals Vol 2
This course will look in the fundamentals of modeling in Maya with an emphasis on creating good topology. It's aimed at people that have some modeling experience in Maya but are having trouble with complex objects.

If any of you decide to purchase a book, CD, or DVD, do not get any DVD's from Alias|Wavefront. At least not the one for texturing and UV's. I nearly fell asleep watching the thing. He talks and talks and talks. To much yakking and not enough working. That's why I like Alex from Gnomon. All work and no play. Fast and to the point. Anyway, there's my two cents.

I'll put in my votes for Maya 4 Fundamentals and Visual QuickStart Guide Maya 4. I recommend both of those books to my beginning and even intermediate 3D students. The Fundamentals book covers pretty all of the basics, but it does not really go into any sort of animation (no coverage of skeletons for sure). The Visual QuickStart Guide is just good general reference.

One of the good things about the Fundamentals book is there is a section in the back that is geared towards users transitioning from 3DS Max. It goes over equivalent key commands and menu items, terminology, processes, etc. I think it does a pretty job of helping "switchers". user added image

For more advanced materials (or even a bit more), here are a few good books I have in my collection:

Maya: Secrets of the Pros
Inspired 3D Character Animation
Inspired 3D Character Setup

It is the sucessor of "Mastering Maya 3" which I heard was a good one.

maaya... join the VIP area at Simply Maya.

you will learn more from these plus you get far far more for your £14!

In fack I think the cheapest DVD you will get will cost you around $60 for like 100 minutes! So here for you £14 you can get around 7 hrs!

I agree with Danny (which also happens to by my name). The Visual Quickstart and Maya Fundamentals are the two books I used to get into Maya. If you plan on making content for games, the book Maya Illuminated: Games by Mesmer.Link to it.

A couple of my students bought "Learning Maya 4", and, after spending an evening flipping through it, I thought it was poorly written and some of the exercises needlessly complex. There's good information in there, but I don't think it was organized very well. It is, however, a fairly thorough book in terms of learning a little bit of everything in Maya. For the money, though, I would get two 3rd party books that are much easier to read and have better projects.

And I agree with TychoCelchuuu. The Mesmer book is wonderful. That's actually one of the first books I bought when I transitioned from Max to Maya -- I needed something focused specifically on games for my freelance work. Even though it was written for Maya 3, all of the concepts and techniques still apply to 4 and 4.5.
