Problem with render and lights

i am getting an odd result when I render the following head.

The top pic is what it is what it should be like but the bottom two show what I am getting.

The dents in the mask do not show up and I get these odd yellow highlights and colourings for no reason.

Please help!

Also I am looking for advise on how to set up a descent lighting system for the character.

Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.
