Snap Together Tool keeps causing crash

Hello. using Maya 8.5 on Precision 690. 2 Gigs RAM. OS XP-Pro.

I have a scene I have been working on for a while. I am now having a problem.

I am trying to snap a fairly simple mesh (200 faces) on to the larger mesh using the Snap Together Tool with the "move and rotate object" option selected.

What keeps happening is that either as I begin to use the tool or immediately after I finish snapping the object the way I want it I get a fatal error message and the program crashes and quits. I should add that the mesh I am snapping is actually a group of two subdivs.

Anyone have any ideas as to why this is happening and what I can do?

Thank you.
