Introduction to Maya - Modeling Fundamentals Vol 1
This course will look at the fundamentals of modeling in Maya with an emphasis on creating good topology. We'll look at what makes a good model in Maya and why objects are modeled in the way they are.

Full annual maintanance means you buy the licence and pay about $1000 to $2000 dollars more on top of that. What you get is free upgrades to all future versions of maya the day the day they are released, a hard copy sent to you in the mail and free support with maya (ANY problems you have...ANY... they will answer, even if you ask them how to fix a scene or whatever)

I had a chance to see a DVD made by some bigshot in the european support for Alias and I must tell you that you would have a hard time understanding what he says (he has an italian/belgique accent) so if this is what support is...MMMMMMMM !

just an example: dianiostics (unless you knew that GN=Y)

imagine yourself trying to figure what he means when you hardly know what the problem is.

I had to use Alias support here at work and they were really good, they didnt solve the problem (it's maya's fault not theirs) but they were really helpful and tried hard to help me...

Alias support is all based in toronto.

Hair is its own dynamic. converting to polys will just allow you to render it in Mental ray. You can add regular fields to affect the hair like wind, turbulence etc.

I really like support, they get my problems solved over 90% of the time.

the only problem i have with hair is that its another paint effect. i guess thats better especially for those who dont have renderman, that can become very memory intensive.

Hair is nice although i dont like how it has its own gravity built into it. a work around appears to be to convert it into poly's, maybe this will remove the gravity effect.

Simply make the gravity on the hairSystem node zero... it is simply there for convenience and efficiency. You can use normal Maya fields on the hair if desired.

Duncan Hi !

Finally someone who can really answer my questions:

With all the exceptional power of Maya - I still think it is weak as far as architectural modeling is concerned, with comparison to 3DMAX,
Is there any intention of changing it ?

I can't really answer all your questions, because future development of Maya is mostly confidential. The 6.0 release was targeted more towards the animation side of things, although future releases may focus more on other elements. Out of curiosity is there a key feature in Max that you miss for achitectural modelling?

Duncan Hi:

Here is a quick list I made:

(Some of these come in MEL but I want them built in !)

0. One of the most important features: Object snaps (Curve/Arc/Circle Center, Midpoint, and more)
1. noise deformer as in 3DMAX (to create non smooth surfaces and bevels)
2. More Basic Building blocks ( frames etc.,)
3. Array - distribute an object along a curve by number or by distance
4. Bridge tool
5. A complete set of layer managment:
- Hide all layers but current
- Lock all layers but current
- Turn all layers on
- Set a layer to current by selecting an object from the layer
- Kill a lyer by picking an object from the layer
6. Blocks like in AutoCAD and not like instances
7. IES Format support for lights.
8. Tubellar Light
9. Polygons Booleans are inconsistent for morphing out openings.
10. Metric units in Maya do not match AutoCAD DWG

Many of these are in the wishlist website for maya but are ignored and many of them seem very easy to program.

I really hope that some willl find their way into Maya 7

Have a nice weekend

Nir

i would like to know if there has been added something like lightwave´s spinquads command and byron´s polytools style bevel to the editpoly menu in maya 6... those would be great time-savers...oh and strip selection based "keep the UV area constant by a scalar of the area of the poly it comes from" smart unwrap...

someone mentioned that softselection was already there on maya 6 and working great?...

I'd like to be able to v, c, or x snap with the scale tool.
