Polygon object optimization

Hi,
I had import a mesh file in maya (polygon mesh) which is a very very heavy mesh and not compartable for at least my PC's configuration. How do I low its polygon mesh. I had tried Polygon>Cleanup but result is not as expected. Whenever I dose Polygon>Cleanup, some of the faces gets deleted creating many holes in that polygon mesh object. Can anybody help me in this matter. Please help me in this, I am currently working on a Project.

I know there is polygon>Reduce but that has given me undesirable results as well. You might be forced to go through and delete certain faces, file holes, recreate faces with split poly tool, then delete faces you don't need.

Darkware, that might be the only way.....Abdul you can also try to turn you model all in quads, than try and clean up... its a long shot but worth a try....

Also, remember to check the normals of your object before running cleanupuser added image

I've had issues with that in the past.
