One issue is that you have these very large polygon faces. Trying to put small openings with square corners is tricky. You can run single diagonal edges and then do the 3-to-1 trick in the corners but that works better if the poly face that the hole is in is closer to the size of the opening.

Like Rick said why not cut it up into four side and not smooth just bevel it will also stop UV stretching, it will save a lot of time trying to make sharp corners............dave

Agreed for that angular shape shooting for a smoothed mesh just adds geometry and complicated making openings.

Rick, the reason why I wanna delete the faces are not because of creating an illusion of opening, but due to hindering those faces to the "periscopes" ... so guys, how exactly would you solve that ?

hmmm. I just tried this and it does work. You could use a transparency map to create holes in the geo without actually having to cut the holes.

Ok, so I will do as you said, create a transparency map just for those 2 "holes"....

yep I added some screen shots to show you. Remember the hole will need both transparency and spec map.

To do the above I UV'd the plate then I actually added some edges to frame the hole. exported a 256x256 uv snapshot. Created the spec / transparency map using the uv snap as a guide. Then deleted the edges and applied the maps to a new blinn.

As for stretching, I found there was no stretching at all when I smoothed it. See the attached image of the plate smoothed.

Oh I forgot some wire shots. You can see the unsmoothed plate and the edges I added to frame the hole.

Then after exporting the uv snapshot and using those edges as a guide to create the maps I just deleted the edges so you are left with the large open polygon. There was no noticeable stretching.

Hi there, it's been a while since I posted here, but, as the topology of the most of the objects had been kinda weird, i had decided to remade them. A problem, which I am currently facing is that I have no idea how to cut those three objects inside "polySurface636" group and paste them into the "main" section as e.g. "right_hull_plate3" is.
