Exporting obj format

I am new to Maya and am having an issue exporting to obj format.
As a simple test I
1. Created a new scene
2. Created a simple Cone
3. Exported the Cone to OBJ format (I made sure to check the objExtract plugin in Plugin Manager)
4. The file is created along with an mtl file but when I try to import it back to a Maya (or Photoshop) scene the object does not appear in the viewport and Photoshop will not import it either (I get a file parsing error).
5. I tried it with different/multiple objects but same result. The files with .obj extensions are all 1kb.
Has anyone run into this?

I basically just create the cone then select it and use the File/Export Selection command. When I import I only select the obj file.
I can download an obj file and modify it's geometry and then do an Export/Import back to Maya but if I add another object to the scene and do File/Export All only the original downloaded object is there. The object I added is gone.
