Maya for 3D Printing - Rapid Prototyping
In this course we're going to look at something a little different, creating technically accurate 3D printed parts.

basic extrude question: face(s) left behind?

hi all

basic question here: why does maya leave behind faces when I extrude down into an object?

see reference attached

and if that's the correct behavior, what's the best method to "extrude out" pieces such as I'm trying to do?

thanks!

You should not extrude into a object unless you need to, extrude up the other 3 polys (on top)to get the result you want..........dave

yep what dave said. otherwise add and edge loop through the middle, delete the faces for the inset, then extrude edges down, and fill hole.

I'll do a quick recording. I you guys do not mind these little videos. For me it is much easier to fire up camtasia and grab a vid capture then try to describe stuff in text. Any way give me 5 minutes and I will have something that will hopefully help you out...

thanks, sounds good;

I have to say, not being able to (easily) extrude into an object is very odd to me; the subtractive process is how my brain works I guess.

Here you go LML. I hope this helps you and and welcome to SM.

howto-create an inset face.mp4 - YouTube

I think the video is still processing as I watch it the mouse is out of sync with the video so I am saying stuff like click on this vert and the mouse is not near the vert. I apologize for that and hope it does not confuse you to much.

It's weird the mouse pointer is no where near where it should be as I recorded the video???

hey thanks very much for that--and now I see what you were getting after, I just need to learn to think about things a bit differently than the apps I learned 3D in--and the border edge "on" option is something I ought to enable

I did notice the pointer thing--weird! but I was able to follow easily still

thanks again!

ah good you were able to figure out the mouse thing. I noticed that too. They just changed the youtube site. I looked at the master and it is pointing to the correct spot so I am guessing it got borked by youtube. I am happy you were able to sort it out.
