Max has better polygon modeling tools
Maya has better sub-d creasing tools
Max has better cloth features
Max has better spline editing tools
Maya has a nicer UV editor
Max has better simulation tools
Maya has MEL

Things that I just thought of right now...

Rendering? Maya and Max both use MentalRay for their high-end rendering. That said, Pixar (Renderman) and nVidia (Gelato) are more geared towards Maya than Max.... that ALSO said, most videogame companies are geared more towards Max than Maya (though nowhere near the stereotypical slant... its still pretty level, and without logical reason why)

Would be nice if XSI would also be compared in the process.. no i like this or that thread.. but just the facts.. im very interested in XSI it has 64 bit support, giga ploygon core and the face robot seems really nice.. also i heared it integrates good with zbrush.

Also Modo 201 seems really great.. well unleast the previews of it that i have seen.

What i really miss in Maya are good polygon tools.. I really like silo it is simple and fast for polygon modelling.. user added image

I get paid to use Maya. No one pays me to use Max. I'd say that's a pretty good "feature" right now. user added image

Max and Maya are different. Simple as that really. Maya has some good tools so does Max. Maya's Nurbs are very cool but then Max's poly modelling tools are some of the best I've ever used. Max has Vray, Brazil etc but then Maya has one of the best renderes ever in the form of Renderman (Pixar). It's all down to the artisti and how he uses the tools he has. Don't get too hung up one one app or the other just use the one you feel most comfortable with and you will learn more and creat more stunning visuals that way. Best of luck to ya.
