Maya? lol

I got some video tutorials which really helped me. You can see how they do it rather than screenshots here and there.

Dont forget a sextant!! Great for measuring thrusts per second (tps)

Theres no better practice than just going in there and experimenting.

But, before you can do that you need to learn the User interface. I recommend this book:

Introducing Maya: 3D For beginners.

It is regularly updated with the latest versions of Maya, and can most time be found at your local library. This is a great book for teaching you the basics concepts of 3D, and it's uses, all the way through Modeling in Polys, Nurbs, Sub-Ds, to Rigging, animation, texturing, rendering, Plus loads of other tips and tricks.

Once you've followed all the Mini lessons in this book. You'll have the knowledge to interact with the UI and also have the know how, to achieve the results desired.

Plus is you want to purchase a copy it's relatively inexpensive, about $35

If you're looking for books to use, I've been going through a book called "Introduction to 3D Graphics & Animation Using Maya" and it's been really helpful.

I also have the book published by Autodesk called "Learing Autodesk Maya 8, Foundation," but that one didn't seem to be as good, in my opinion. Hope that helps!
