Introduction to Maya - Modeling Fundamentals Vol 2
This course will look in the fundamentals of modeling in Maya with an emphasis on creating good topology. It's aimed at people that have some modeling experience in Maya but are having trouble with complex objects.

If you search around a bit Ragecgi has posted a way to open Maya 4.5 files in 4.0, but only if nothing that is only found in 4.5 has been utilized, like Fluids.

I'll make it short for you: save as a .ma and edit the file header to read 4.0 instead of 4.5. user added image

Ok?

Thanks for the help, I ended up using a free plugin called FBX file format which worked really well, I did try changing the header on the .MA file but couldn't get that to work, thanks anyway.
James.

z1mmnd14: Care to elaborate?

At least, I use that technique more frequently than I probably should and even with nasty scenes on big, complex shows it's never given me any trouble that I shouldn't have anticipated.

He's saying exactly what I'm saying. He just illustrates it.

I don't recall whether I've changed the fileInfo lines, but I don't think anything but the Requires line matters.

I've had several occassions where I needed to remove the fileInfo lines in order to make it work. I've also had to get rid of the connectAttr lines at the bottom of the file on a few files. In general, changing the "requires" item and at least commenting out the fileInfo lines works just fine. No problems thus far (knock on wood...).
