Maya 2020 fundamentals - modelling the real world
Get halfway through a model and find it's an unworkable mess? Can't add edge loops where you need them? Can't subdivide a mesh properly? If any of this sounds familiar check this course out.

Create mesh from greyscale

Hi all,

I used maya years ago and i remmeber using such an effect i just can t remember how to.
What i want is to create geometry from a grayscale image, the image is just some basic gray squares. (i remember using it to generate random height bulding for a cityscape).
I do not want to use displacement or bump as i need actual mesh, that i can work with.
If anyone could show me a way to do so, it d be greatly appreciated.

Create a displacement, and then go to Edit>Convert>Displacement to Polygons.

Imagination is more important than knowledge.

Hi NextDesign,

Thanks a lot for your answer although i know this method, the problem is that the result aren t really accurate unless i tweak it a lot. It s a very basic grey scale, isn t there any alternate solution to create a mesh from this image ?
