Over the last couple of years UV layout in Maya has changed for the better. In this course we're going to be taking a look at some of those changes as we UV map an entire character

3d Texture Creation ...

Are you limited only to the 3d textures supplied within Maya. 2d textures seem to be unlimited. How are 3d textures created, and I don't mean applied to surfaces. How are the original textures created and can additional textures be created from scratch.

what exactly do you mean by 3d textures? all textures can be created in photo shop or any similiar program. for 3d looking textures one has to apply the right stuff but it can all be done in PS.

3d textures are mapped through the object, as opposed to a 2d texture that is mapped to the objects surface. These 3d textures are mapped in 3d space instead of 2d bit mapping. I work on a Mac and cannot use procedural authoring tools, like Darktree, that are Windows only programs. I'm wondering if there is anything similar out there. Thanks for the reply. I do use CS3 Extended extensively but need the mapping characteristics of a true 3d texture for more complex surfaces.
