Every tutorial at SM now has at the bottom of its download page, the version of maya it was created with- please be aware that if it contains a 4.5 scene file it MAY not open in 4.0 even after conversion. So please ask here if you are concerned about a particular tutorial

Please note the conversion may not always work

UPDATE

For those who have Mental Ray installed on Maya 4.5, and you want to clean up the nasty Mental Ray code for a cleaner 4.0 conversion, here is a link to a NEW mel script that removes the MentalRay nodes from Maya files (.ma and .mb)
