Introduction to Maya - Modeling Fundamentals Vol 2
This course will look in the fundamentals of modeling in Maya with an emphasis on creating good topology. It's aimed at people that have some modeling experience in Maya but are having trouble with complex objects.

Tongue Trouble

I was just slapping a simple texture on me rough poly tongue when I noticed the bump was all funny. So to investigate further I changed the texture to a checker to see if I could pinpoint the problem. This is what I got...

I know that I can modify it by using the UV editor but why does it seem to have gone so mad in the first place? Surely it would have placed an even checker over the whole object? All replies greatly appreciated...

I think your using a 2d texture node instead of a 3d texture placement node. I could be wrong and I hope someone corrects me if I am. 2d texture nodes fallow the UV map. where as 3d texture nodes ignore UV's and fill things evenly in 3d space.

Try using like the lather texture which comes with a 3d texture placement.

If you really really want to use the checker pattering. Believe there is a way to switch the 2d with the 3d texture placement node. Although I have not done that myself.

If this was a cube originally and you havent layed out your UVs then it still maintains the original cubes uv layout. Which obviously going to stretch and distort. Just because you lay a checker texture on it doesnt mean to say it's going to be applied evenly. you have to do that user added image

Funny you should say that... I just been reading about that in me Character Animation for Maya book. I didn't realise that you should/could layout your UVs before actually modeling - and yes I did start with a cube.

Thanks chaps user added image

No you do it after you've finished modelling and never before user added image
