Transparency Using ShadowMaps

How can you render eye lashes using depth maps instead of ray tracing (you know the ol' transparency thing) I just dont want to use geometry unless I have too!!

use paint fx instead then, or renderable curves. How on earth are you gong to do them with depth maps?
