Need help! Maya Hair on Poly problems!!!

Im trying to model the human body (First time for me by the way) , and at the moment i havent gotten any further then the head and when i tried to attach hair and rendered it this happend:
The hair were visable through the head from every direction, check the image i attached (i think atleast its attached now^^) and you'll see....



I have put a lot of time in this so id rather not redo it all if possible...

ive never used maya hair but you might have to layout the uv's... just guessing dont take my word though...user added image

you sir, are a genius, just about to post the same problem of my own. You do have to layout the UVs first.
