when your in the scene which you want to import the .ma.. just go to
File > Import.. and a pop up window will come up and you just browse to where you have that .ma and import it...
there are also a couple of settings in the Import > Options you might want to look at..
:p

A shader is the combination of a material(s) and texture(s). The easiest way to see it is to open the Hypershade (Window > Rendering Editors > Hypershade in Maya 4+, Window > Hypershade in earlier versions) and in that window, File > Import. You'll see the shader appear in your shader list in the Hypershade.

Also, just for reference...

To apply that new shader to your model, just do this:

1. open the Hypershade
2. Import, or create your shader(s)
3. Select your model
4. right-click on the shader and choose:
"Assign Material To Selection"

There you go.
