Disco Polygons (help)

Hi there, I have a bit of a strange one, I'm sure it's something that needs ticking or unticking in the preferences. When working in maya all of the objects just appear a random solid color, and if I deselect it it changes color, then if I select it again, it changes color again. It makes it really difficult to work because the objects display no shading so if you're working close to something you lose all sense of depth.
I've got it set to smooth shade all in the shading bit in the display window. Any ideas?

If it is changing colour randomly then it sounds very much like it's a graphics card driver issue, what graphics card are you using ?

uh... Intel GMA 950...? I think. I'm not too hot on what's what in the way of hardware.
