simulating light sources

is there a standard method for simulating a light bulb? like if you could see the source of a light in a room - a bulb or halogen light for example. could you put a maya light in it, and have the light react the same way?
i want to make a halogen light, the long kind on ceilings. what's the best way to mimic that kind of light source? the result sholud be a rectangular area lit up, as opposed to circular...

I would suggest using perhaps an ambient light or area light, to light the whole room as it would be if lit by a lamp. You could then take the object that is your bulb, and put a glow on it, so that it would look as though the bulb was giving off the light.
Good Luck
