Selecting Vertices (one surface at a time)

Hi there! I find it rather frustrating that every time I select a patch of vertices to work with on a 3d object, the patch I selected plus all the area on the other side of the 3d object is also selected. Is there any way to turn that off, or control that?

Thanks!!

Uou can use the paint selection tool. I recommend saving the tool on a shelf because it will get annoying going back and fourth to find it.

Just incase you don't know where it is, its located under

Edit>Paint Selection tool.
