Vanishing Effect

For a given polygon mesh, How do I create an animation of vanishing effect? At frame 0, the mesh remains intact. At frame 10, 10% lower part of the mesh vanishes. At frame 70, 70% of the lower part mesh no longer exists. At frame 100, the mesh totally disappears. Does anyone have an idea?

yeah use ramp shading with transparant mapping - using colors from black => grey => white for opacity
