Introduction to Maya - Modeling Fundamentals Vol 2
This course will look in the fundamentals of modeling in Maya with an emphasis on creating good topology. It's aimed at people that have some modeling experience in Maya but are having trouble with complex objects.

My mesh is not sharpen enough

Hi all!
I'm using MayaPLE to make static meshes for Unreal Tournament 2003. But I have a problem.

Take a look at the Epic's mesh and then at my own mesh with the same model and texturing as the epic's one.

I never get the same sharpness and shadow as the Epic's meshes. I have triangulate and tried difference scales on the textures, but my meshes only got a smooth and boring look.

I wrote about this in a UT2003-forum and they are talking about I have to setting up a smoothing groups properly??. I don't know Maya much and don't understand 'smoothing groups'. The most of them are using Max or Lightwave, so they can't tell me exactly what to do in MayaPLE.

Anyone here who can tell me what I'm doing wrong and what I can do to get a more sharper look on my meshes?

Looks like a job for Soften/Harden Edge. (Edit Polygons > Normals > Soften/Harden Edge > Options) Change the hardness in the options.

yes ro you convert to subdivs...

you can also convert to subdivsion -
its not needed to smooth polygon, mostly it destroy your modell or it makes to mutch of polygon counts...

1, menue edit/convert(polygon to subdivision)
than maya makes your modell very smooth and a bit thinner.

2, press right mouse BUtton/
there you choose //Polygon//
than its showing green polygon mesh over the smooth subdiv-surface of the model,

3, than you switch again with pressing right mousebutton and select //edges//

4, than you select the edges showing @ this place where you need hard edges

5, than you choose menue - Subdivs/fullcreaseVertex
and Maya makes you there a perfect edge.

with this method the rest of your modell is perfect.

you can also afther again covert //Subdivs to polygon// or what ever you need...

Mtmckinley:
I tried that you said about Soften/Harden Edge. I only selected the object and choose All Hard(0) in the options, but there wasn't any difference.

Otaku:
Are you using MayaPLE or another Maya?
I can't find any menue Edit/Convert.
If I right click the object I can't find any Polygon to choose.
I can't find any menue Subdivs/fullcreaseVertex

The only thing I tried was to select the object and choose Edit Polygons - Subdivisions and I got this look:

I think it looks more sharpen, but not nice.

You should only sharpen the edges that need to be sharp, not the whole object .. thats is my guess anyway.
