textures

when i make a model i want to be able to add detail to it ie.. if i make a baseball player i want to put the logo on his shirt. My question is , how can i do that? do i need to create the logo in photoshop and import it into maya.. for example i create a tire and i want to make a white bumpmap for the lettering on the tire.

It would be a part of the model's texture map.
