Scaling points to line them up

Okay I am pretty sure I saw this in one of the videos I downloaded here.. going to go look but if anyone beats me to it I would be grateful..

I have a curve with a series of cvs, I want them to be even from the side.. I tried scale but when I select them all and scale in the side view, they don't stop once they are all lined up, the scale tool keeps right on booking once they line up, so I am bouncing back and forth..

I know for sure that I saw someone scale the points so they stopped once they lined up..

Thanks for any help
