fakin GI....some questions

Hi there all mayans,

LIghtwave and Max have a function that lets you imitate the dust and grime buildup often associated with real objects. This would make a fantastic diffuse map, ie the nooks and crannies get the darker (less light) area of the mapping.

Lightwave and Max, (probably others too) have the ablilty to burn/bake this into a texture to use for animation, etc....

my question is 'apart from GI Joe, and that other plugin that takes as long to render a single frame as mental ray using GI and FG what are my options for creating a great diffuse map?

Iv'e been using lots of ramps and textures, results are OK for simple geometry.

any ideas for discussion please.......

thanks guys more stuff please

Thanks guys,

Some of the key 'catch phrases' of 2002 was and is 'Global illumination, 'non-linear' and procedural (animation and modelling).

It would be great to see more discussion on these topics.

As for fakin GI maybe a special thread (ongoing) could be developed for the Lighting, camera and rendering forum that targets this and explores the techiniques, art, uses etc......

My use of GI (faking or real) is not to only make realistic scenes etc but,
more importantly
to create scenes that are (physically) based in some environment with its own rules for light etc......

Hope this makes sense.

A saying that paralles nicely with CG art........

"If it smells like fish then it aint good fish".....
