Maya Prices

I have been using maya ple for some time now and finally have a job and want to buy maya 8. I have been looking around and the best deal i found was maya student edition for under 400 but you only have a 1 time serial...Which is bogus because what if i have to reformat my computer? Or if I buy a new one. But i was wondering where did you guys get it. I am a senior in Highschool so i don't have alot of money.
Thanks
