Move Face while keeping edges flexible

Hi,

I'm trying to follow a tutorial. In it, the instructor moves a single face on a sphere, but the edges are flexible and end up being curved as he pulls the face (I'm going to try to attach pics) - and he doesn't seem to be using Soft Selection. He pulls the face in two steps: 1) Out, and then 2) Up.

When I use the move tool to move the face, the edges are solid straight lines and the face and edges don't deform as they're being moved. Mine looks like this (as faces normally look when extruded):

I've tried looking extensively online, but haven't found anything close. I've never seen a face being moved the way the instructor in the tutorial does it.

If anyone can point me in the right direction, it'd be much, much appreciated.

Thanks in advance!
