Total newbie

Hey everybody
Can anyone tell me how to assign a file texture without modifying the current one.For example I already have the current one basicly painted(the faces) but when I use the 3dpaint tool I have to assign a new file texture so when I do that the entire object turns to the defolt blin color.I'm trying to paint the details only.
I tried edit/ convert to file texture in the hypershade (Like in the help file) but I don't have a shader attached to the model (I've tried every thumb there is).Can anyone piont me to the right direction user added image
Thanx anyway

mmm i don't use the 3D paint tool, but if you were to paint a texture in another program, like photoshop, then assign it to your model, it'd be very easy to alter. just make any changes you want in photoshop, save, and reload the file texture in maya. or save it as another name, and import that instead.

if you want to do it with the 3D paint tool, maybe someone else can help you.
