Maya 2020 fundamentals - modelling the real world
Get halfway through a model and find it's an unworkable mess? Can't add edge loops where you need them? Can't subdivide a mesh properly? If any of this sounds familiar check this course out.

Check the help files for 'paint effects'.

Should send you the right way.

I just went threw them and followed it step by step, though my grass still goes threw the surface and goes onto my grid axis...

Marlon is the surface poly or nurbs ? if it's poly you need to make the surface paintable and it also needs it's UV's to be layed out in the 1:1 area.
Another option is to make the surface live and draw curves on it and then attach the paint effects to the curves but that not the most intuitive solution although it would work.

im sure this has been thought of before but couldnt you just create fur on your plane and color it green to simulate grass?

You also need to do the UV's on a poly object for Fur to cover correctly so no time save there. It is possible to get away with just automapping the UV's with fur but you might get some weird results if it a complex model but a deformed plane for grass should be quick and easy to map.
