Maya for 3D Printing - Rapid Prototyping
In this course we're going to look at something a little different, creating technically accurate 3D printed parts.

File opening problems with maya 2013

Hello,
I have recently downloaded Maya 2013 so I could work on a project away from school (the version I use at school is maya 7), but every time I open my saved file some things are missing. For example my project was a rigged character I was just about to animate, and now when I open it in the 2013 version my skin, or the geometry that is the character (sorry I' still new and don't know the correct terms) is completely gone and some of my skeleton is still in place but a majority of the joints are just a pile on the grid. Can anyone help me fix this so I can open the file the same way it was on the Maya 7 version with my rigged character still intact?

The file formats have changed from maya 7 to maya 2013.

First there is an "ignore version" flag in the open options. Make sure that is turned on. But there is a lot of changes that have been made from version 7 to maya 2013 so you still may be unable to open the scene directly.

You may be able to export to obj and then import the obj into maya 2013 but I do not know if rigging information is maintained in obj format.

I don't think there was an fbx exporter for maya 7, it's just to many version back. However, I believe that fbx would be a better bet for maintaining rigging info.

You may just be unable to transfer all the data from maya 7 to maya 2013. Sorry.

Maya 2013 has introduced some major changes to the file format so even with the "ignore version" flag set there is no guarantee that maya 2013 scenes will be readable in older versions of maya.

You will need to have someone with maya 2013 export the scene as an obj or fbx format and then import it into maya 2012.
