Introduction to Maya - Modeling Fundamentals Vol 2
This course will look in the fundamentals of modeling in Maya with an emphasis on creating good topology. It's aimed at people that have some modeling experience in Maya but are having trouble with complex objects.

Monochrome rendering

Hi all! Very new to Maya, learing my way along. user added image I've seen some excellent work in the WIP forums, and one of the things I really like is the "monochrome" rendering... where it's kinda sepia tone, which brings out all the shadows and detailing very nicely. How do you get Maya to do that? Is it a one-button solution, or do you have to set some rendering parameters?

Thanks in advance!

You can create a monochrome or sepia look to your work in post-production, using a program such as Photoshop or Shake. Maya doesn't have a one-button solution to this....the renderer will render what your scene looks like, and what the shaders/textures are like that you've applied to your objects.

Take a page from traditional camera work and use a "filter"

Place a plane in front of the camera with the tint you want and with sufficient transparency on. If the camera is animated, you'll want to group or parent the plane to the camera.

May need to play with transparency and color settings to get look you like.

Bad idea!! If you do this you're stuck with it! and if you want to change it you would have to re-render EVERYTHING!! Lisa's idea is the way to go by adding it in post you can always change it without re-rendering.

The effect you are talking about though is achieved by using global illumination either through mental ray or a dome of lights to give soft shadowing. Try GI Joe or something similar.
