Building a Computer, Need to know what I'm missing or to change anything

Hey guys! I found a recent post hear on the same topic but that man/woman is looking for. Well this HP laptop cant really run Maya anymore.

I'm running out of hard drive space and the speed is wearing off. I am going to build a new desktop. But before I do I want to know if the parts I picked out are good. Also I am using this for photoshop so mainly for designing.

I heard you need a good graphics card and processors. Well there is this site called www.newegg.com where I will be getting all my parts from.

So anyways. I have a budget of around 1,500$ and I need everything BUT a monitor. I picked some stuff out and I'm at around 1,200$ So tell me what is bad and what I should change etc. But remember there is tax and shipping. I will thank you so much!!

Just type in the product names and models. Newegg has awesome deals, you just have to be sure what you buy is compatible together.

looks like a pretty good setup, I might swap out the ram for kingston. Maybe get a MoBo with 2 PCi e slots for quad monitors, throw in a couple of 10,000 rpm internal drives. newegg has the WD1500ADFD for $190. Good Luck!user added image

Yeah I just figured out you need a main internal drive for an exterrnal because their to slow so I'm going to be getting https://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822144423
Maybee if I get more money Ill add one of those you suggested when I need it. I think 400gigs will last a while. Thanks!

400 gig should last a life time, but the seek times are double that of a 10,000 rpm drive. massive amounts of long term storage can always be pawned off on cheap spare drives. The only reason I suggested the high rpm drive is the performance boost. (clicky clicky...like changing channels on the TV)

Well, you may get some issues with that gfx card. You should check around the net to see if it is compatible/qualified. If this rig is gonna be for gaming, then stick with at least an nVidia GeForce 7800GTX. If it is strictly for Maya and the like, then get either a nVidia Quadro or ATi FireGL card. I have a 7800GTX, and it works with Maya pretty well, for the most part.

Great CPU, best value for the price. I think the E6600 is the best buy, cus the price jumps up to high for the E6700, and you're only getting .33GHz of an advantage for $200 more. Everything else is the same between them.

The mobo isn't bad, but I think I'd go with something a bit beefier, like the ASUS P5B Socket T P965Express, or the View Pic ASUS P5B Deluxe Socket T P965Express for SLi. From what I've seen, the P965 NorthBridge is just as good as 975, but a bit cheaper.

The Case is cool, but the PSU is only 450Watts. That will get you by, probably, if you're just running the basics. But, don't plan on running SLi or having a ton of storage, cus 450W won't handle it.

Great price on the optical drive.

For the RAM, brand is really preference, as there are a few good brands to choose from. Myself, I would get either the CORSAIR XMS2 TWIN2X2048-5400C4PT or the CORSAIR XMS2 TWIN2X2048-6400C4. They are a bit more than the RAM you specified, but this stuff really rocks.

Other than that, I'd say go for it.

I do agree on the MoBo and P/S...I bought my P/S separately , never trust anything that comes in a "white box".

as far as sli...$$ hardware + $$ P/S, I only suggested the dual cards for the real estate... 1 ortho view per 3 monitors + 1 for perspective. I have dual 21" right now and am dying for 2 more.

It's nice to tear off a view and chuck it on another monitor.

IMHO

Definitely, Barnam. It would be nice to have a 4 monitor setup. I remember back in the day when having 2 monitors was the coolest.:p

But, just because a card is compatible/qualified doesn't mean it will cost a fortune. The card he had is $270. He can find a compatible/qualified for less. I was just saying I would check before spending that much on a card.

erictacti,

I agree, I just meant that their list is not the final word. None of my cards are on the list, and they work fine.

Here's one for you, after your last post, I was sitting here and got an e-mail about your reply. From that point, I have not been able to access www.simplymaya.com from any computer in my house. All of the other simply sites are fine, as well as the rest of the internet. I am posting this reply through a proxy server that I found on the internet. Until I get this figured out I probably won't be around. I'm going to a friends tonite to change my password so the proxy site does not have it logged.

Peace, Donnie

aaaahhhh! the internet

I'm baaaack.

Temporarily resolved. All of the simplysites have the same IP address. So, somewhere on the internet between me and here, there is a DNS server with, either a conflicting entry or no entry for simplymaya.com and the related forum.

The fix was to add www.simplymaya.com and forums.simplymaya.com to my hosts file.

Since 67.15.78.42 is the IP for all of these sites that I go to, I did not think of doing it, because the 2 mentioned above are the only ones that did not work. I was also afraid that doing so would kill the others, not the case.

My weekend in a nutshell, Happy Holidays!
