Beer glass scene creation
This course contains a little bit of everything with modeling, UVing, texturing and dynamics in Maya, as well as compositing multilayered EXR's in Photoshop.

Robot rigging question.

Hello,

I am in the process of learning how to rig. I have modelled a robot and I'm trying to rig the legs to move a certain way, but without any luck.

Please see the attached images.

Basically, I want point 'A' to work as a knee pivot, causing point 'B' and 'C' to close and come together when the leg bends (and vice versa when it moves outward). I want point 'D' to be a fixed position, with the leg moving forward, back, right and left from that point.

Whenever I have tried to rig the leg, point 'B' and 'C' have either stayed the same distance or just moved outward, and not inward.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,

Matt.

a pic of the problem areas when the legs are in motion would be helpfull, but basically I think it is just a matter of paintweighting skins. also since it is a robot and theres no need for smoothBinding like for deforming skin I would bind everything in a rigid way or just group the necessary parts into the bones hierarchy if you haven´t allready done so.

everything starts and ends in the right place at the right time.

I am noticing your robot is one of the old style toy robots.. but the toy robots legs dont bend at the knees.. only at the hips and from there pretty much rotate on a arc.

Anyways.. to try and help you.. it looks like you need to modify it up some perhaps.

This assuming I understand what you're asking. Wanting it to bend like a leg with a knee joint with out wierd deformation and keeping the "D" cyilnder still.
