Complex UV Layout in Maya
Over the last couple of years UV layout in Maya has changed for the better. In this course we're going to be taking a look at some of those changes as we UV map an entire character

Thanks Dave and bullet1968. For now this is going to be a modelling exercise only. I have ten thumbs when it comes to Photoshop and texturing. Maybe sometime in the distant future when I'll slap some paint on it.

thanks bullet1968. there is just one small little obstacle to cross: UVs
i've been wondering. are there any modellers out there that actually get a kick out of uv mapping?

It's kind of like a jigsaw puzzle in some ways, so I guess there are people who like that sort of thing... on the other hand, it can often be mindless and as such, therapeutic, so crank the tunes and get to work.

I just now noticed the update. The fw-190 is coming along nicely Pixal. For the flap and aileron and other control surface ribbing I would go with a bump map. For major section lines like where the cowling clearly separates it is pretty easy to just separate the geometry and extrude a small amount inward where they meet. The remaining panel detail can be done in textures.

thanks ctbram. the extract with extrude works well. had to tweak the edges lightly to adjust for the loss in continuity of the curves.

Nice mate....anyone who loves UV mapping is probably in a straight jacket some where in the back room of the Lets Go Crazy motel......you will be fine...there are some tuts in here on it or Google it....I hate it and found it very annoying but I would like to think I dont have much trouble now....seams are about my only concern. Just think of it as modelling...as you kinda have to think in that way to get it to work.

Update time. Only tail section, main wing, prop and landing gear left. Still thinking about the inside of the cockpit.

looking great pixal. The Germans had those great cowl latches. They make for excellent details.

There is a lot of excellent and interesting surface detail on the FW-190!
