If that checker is applied to the entire object, I'd guess you need to UV map it. I wouldn't have thought that make it render invisible, though.

their has to be somthing set wrong with the geometry, I didnt have the problem till I used the cp tool, so somethig happened to the faces. If I smooth it then shading is fine.
