Maya for 3D Printing - Rapid Prototyping
In this course we're going to look at something a little different, creating technically accurate 3D printed parts.

UV Scale error?

Maya 2008, dual 2.2ghz 4gb ram winxp64. Simply trying to scale down my stool.

Right: The Original stool at full size works fine

Wrong: Scaling down the stool by 90% messes up the texture

Any ideas?

How has this been modelled?

Polys or NURBS. And scaling down ur UV's once there mapped can cause issues.

NURBS needs textures baked to they remain in situe otherwise you end up with strange results. Really need more info on the way this is set up before making an educated guess at whats going on.

Modelled with simple poly's with color, specular, & displacement maps. The more I scale down my object the fatter and more distorted it gets.

Maybe it's because the stool comes from a tutorial using simple geometry imported from an older version of Maya (like 4 or 5) and imported into 2008? It's strange though because it's literally just slightly modified cylinders.

Are the textures 2D or 3D based?

try freezing the transformations first (modify>freeze transformations)...

also, it could be the disp. map. displacement maps are kind of sketchy to work with, and they are really just a trial and error thing in maya.

depending on wht i know in 3ds max, once u model any object, u can't scale it down or scale it up. it'll distort it's uv co ordinates. for that, either u WILL have to prepare ur model in small size, or if u have to scale it down after modeling, then do it in sub mode, not in sub object(vertex, edge, face) mode.

thats not really true in maya, if i understand the Max lingo. scaling down does not distort UV's, Unless you select the UV's and scale them within the UV editor...

The textures are 2d based.. not sure what 3d based textures are really..? Would love an explanation.

I tried Freezing transformations, which didn't work, but thanks for the response. I also tried baking the displacements but that didn't really work either.

The easiest way for us to sort out whats going on is for you to post the model.
Happy to take a look at it and see what is what.
