This isn't the ref photo I was going off, but it gives the idea: http://photography.byrev.org/wp-cont...andles-Lit.jpg

If I have time, I'll fiddle with the candle bump.

AGHGHGH... I'm consistently getting fatal errors when I try to apply a material with a layered texture containing a projection to my egg.

Can't even move forward with this. Frustrating. Probably PEBKAC, but I don't get it.

Okay, well I converted from NURBS to poly, and now it's "working". Don't know why that should make a difference, but ah well. Such is maya.

Well I've been learning a thing or two about shading networks, which is good.

I was hoping to get to lighting a lot sooner, since that was what I really wanted to nail, so we'll see how the next few days go before the deadline Comments and crits are welcome, providing they don't have to do with lighting and the lack of flame.

Thanks Dave, yeah, I'm hoping to also do some color correction and tweaks in PS after I render. Right now there's a sun & sky contributing, so that bleaches it. I'll have to take a look at Gen's handy tool and try to learn some linear workflow.

I think there is a lot going on with with the worktop as in reflections, strong shadows and the pattern, which at the moment detract from your scene. I would knock back the reflection a bit, and I know the shadows will change once the light source is the candle… oh just a thought if you had a wall or something behind the egg waving his arms, you would not have as much of the worktop and also you could get some great 'scary monster' shadows. just a quick sketch of what i am on about. one other thing you could try is moving the camera down and in a bit so it feels like you are around the camp fire with them. And I agree with daverave about the colour but you will get that with the flame.

Please don't think i am just picking holes in it,you got a potential for a great fun image… if you nail that flame lighting it will look brilliant! Just giving you my professional opinion

SH*T i should not be telling you this … i want to win!

Starting out on the lighting. Still a long way to go (nothing on the matches and marshmallow yet).
I think I will adjust the camera like you suggested, steve. I think I'd like it to keep the light close and intimate so I won't get the nice cast shadow like you sketched, but I think that's a really cool idea.
