Simple problem i can't fix!

I'm very new to Maya and ive got a problem that sould be really easy to fix!
What's happening is: when i try and select a vert, face or edge and i try and simply move it, it creates a new one and starts moving that! I've been using Maya 8.5 for a while and it's been fine- I must have pressed a keyboard shortcut and now it's freaking out on me! Please HEELLPPP!!!

sounds like you have the split polygon tool seleted. make sure you are in component mode and make sure you have the move tool selected. I suppose another reason for this is that you could have faces sitting on top of one another.
