Odd Material Behavior

A picture's worth a thousand words...

It doesn't happen on 5 (smooth shade all without textures)
and it render's fine:

Somebody knows what it is about?

And I have a question about normal maps - how do the colors show the bumps? In other words, what do I need to do to a texture to turn it into a normal map?

Thanks in advance,
Benny

Something about objects going over each other without ant connection to their x,y,z coordinates...
the second picture shows it the way it's supposed to be. The first, shows it ... well, weird.
