Edge Loop Problem

Hi all-

I'm trying to make a simple mixer in Maya and I'm pretty new to the program. I have most of the geometry sculpted and I'm trying to create an edge loop going along the middle, but whenever I try to the geometry gets all weird and messed up. Attached are pictures of what I'm talking about- any suggestions for what to do to fix it?

Thanks!

Looks like you have interior faces where the handle meets the body. You need to delete those and make sure all verts are merged

How would I do that without creating an n-gon? I have an edge loop going around the interior of the handle, and it looks like that interior face needs to be there

The horizontal faces where the handle meets the body they gotta go.

The ones inside the mesh.
