Introduction to Maya - Modeling Fundamentals Vol 1
This course will look at the fundamentals of modeling in Maya with an emphasis on creating good topology. We'll look at what makes a good model in Maya and why objects are modeled in the way they are.

Extract Faces?

Hi,

I am trying to detach a part of my poly model, now when I used Max all you had to do was select the faces you wanted to detach and hit detach, simple! In maya I thought the equivilant was extract faces, but when I use this it does detach the selected faces but it breaks them all up into individual pieces, meaning I have to merge all the verts back together again, annoying!
am I doing something wrong? I've tried playing around with the settings but to no avail!

Any help would be cool, thanks, James.

Just make a small line using split poly tool where you want to detach the object, than delete thoughs small faces.

The object will still be one even though it will apperes to be 2. Than go edit polygon> seperate.

Now you will have 2 objects...

There's a few scripts on highend that will do this for you, as well as take care of the "3rd parent node" issueuser added image

Should be in thier mel "polygons" or "modeling" sections....

One of which I used in my explosion tutorials, but I can't remember the name at the momentuser added image

you can also turn on the "Keep Faces Together" option under Polygons > Tool Settings. When you extract, all the faces will remain together.
