Maya 2020 fundamentals - modelling the real world
Get halfway through a model and find it's an unworkable mess? Can't add edge loops where you need them? Can't subdivide a mesh properly? If any of this sounds familiar check this course out.

Just drew this up really quickly to show you what I have been thinking. (again excuse the horrible drawing)

Alright here's the story, a group of Martian soldiers are going for a city powerplant, which provides a forcefield protecting the city from any substantial attacks from the Martian army.

The grey boxes are going to be more futuristic buildings that I was too lazy to show and the green ray going up will be a beam/particles that comes from the top of the plant to form the force field.

nice start to the buildings and you're progressing fast dude user added image
think about playing with the layout - would a taller scene let you use a taller generator and show more of the green beam or would a wider view (pillarbox shaped) let you see more of the troops advancing?
Just ideas to throw into the mixer user added image

hmm t1ck135 you bring up a good point. My thought as of the moment Im thinking of a wider view with the powerplant further away so there will be a longer view of the beam.

I believe playing with the layout would be a good idea. If the power plant is the main focus of the pic then remove the clutter in front of it so you can see it better. Rearrange the the building structures so that everything flows towards the powerplant.

This of course is just my sugggestion.

Thanks for the suggestions! I tried to make the powerplant more centric but I want to also have enough room for the battle models to take place.

antoher try at a setup, havnt modeled any actual buildings because I have only been able to work for about 20 min today and still am not sure what the final setup will be...

The new layout looks alot better!user added image The only thing I would suggest would be to make the power plant a bit taller, and be careful not to add too much in the scene or it might distract the viewer.

Great work so far.

About the buildings. For the first type I think you should
mix the both models each one is good in some way.
for exemple I love the lower part of the left building
and the top part of the right, so I guess mixing them and
adding some details would be great.

For the second type i don't think it looks like an office
building it's more like a reactor of some kind
and I would add 7-8 copies of the left one
around the power plant and connect them with some
cables and connect it all with power plant.
(If you have seen FF7-Advent Children in the begining
there is a power plant with reactors around it so that's
the style I'm talking about)

Again add details 'couse that's what makes the image come alive.
Add some building that are far away from the camera
to fill the empty space in the background.
Maybe even create some low poly models of
space ships flying around.

Thanks for the advise aZriel, I wish I could put the amount of detail into those buildings as you do in your cathidral but my modeling experiance is very limited but I hope this project will change that. My plan is to make the enviroment first, the buildings and background. Then make some spaceships/fighters in the sky. Import my rigged soldiers and hoover craft and model a transport of sorts. Then lighting and texturing. Hope I can finish this in time...

.:Edit:.

aZriel Do you have a pic of that reactor in Advent Children? I think that would help alot, Im kind of running out of ideas with the powerplant...
